The thrill of competing in their first fautasi race ended with a frustrating watery spill in front of the Mulinu’u seawall, with the finishing line insight, for the Marist Angels on Monday.
The boat became so waterlogged the word was given for the race to be abandoned.
“The boat was taking too much water so we had to stop for safety reasons,” a disappointed Marist St. Joseph’s Sports Club President Tagaloa Fa’afouina was forced to concede.
There was no denying however that the experience is going to shape up a renewed determination for the champion rugby club.
“We had a great experience and we were enjoying our little race with the likes of the Little Rina (rowed by the Apia Rugby club), but our boat was in no shape to continue.”
Tagaloa and his crew however will get their chance to have another go at their new found sport in tomorrow’s race.
They have another boat available to them for their use but they are leaving that to what the likely conditions will turn out to be tomorrow.
Monday’s first race was a struggle for most of the boats, with a stiff breeze meeting them head on and  choppy seas where the water splashed freely into the boats.
The conditions also made it difficult for the starters to get the boats off to a good start.
As for the Marist Angels, they are a crew to be on the watch out for in the future.
President Tagaloa confirmed that they are looking to having a boat of their own, and to build up a strong team of rowers to be as competitive as the established boats.
