Samoan fans of American football were gutted on Super Bowl day when live coverage of the big game failed to be broadcast on any of the major television networks received in Samoa.
Samoa is a rugby union country, but pockets of local fans have grown around Apia over the years who follow American football like religion.
Most are made up of those who can access by television, live coverage from across neighbouring American Samoa.
By game day last Sunday most were gathered around their various watering holes, armed to the teeth with cold Vailima beer waiting to cheer for their team.
One of the larger groups of up to 30 grid iron fanatics, were crowded at their favourite watering hole at the Le Manumea Hotel at Vailima on Sunday.
But the high expectations turned into loud groans of bitter disappointment when it was suddenly discovered that the televised broadcast would not be available in Samoa on any of the American networks.
They were eventually forced to drown their bitter disappointment by hooking up to the internet for a play by play coverage of the game.
Owner of Le Manumea Hotel and leading American Football fanatic, Norman Paul Jnr. told Newsline that they were crushed.
“This was an event we all looked forward to all year long,” he protested.
“This was such a disappointment, especially after being such a devoted fan of the NFL [National Football League], and after watching all games throughout the season.
This is the main game of the year and they didn’t even broadcast it.
“Hopefully they will fix this problem before next year’s Superbowl,” stressed Paul.
Another bitterly disappointed fan, was Cliff Bartley,
“I was absolutely guttered that the game wasn’t broadcasted. This was THE GAME and we had argued and fought over it all week.”
It was later discovered that the problem involved contractural obligations between the major networks and the NFL.
