The Samoa Women’s Manusina 7s coach Leu Alani Ulia has named a squad of 10 players that will prepare for the upcoming Pacific 7’s Tournament in Papua New Guinea on the 30th November – 1 December. They will accompany a selected Samoa Mens’ development squad which was announced earlier last week..

“The team have been in training for quite some time now, and the girls are just rearing to go” exclaims an enthusiastic Dawn Rasmussan, Manageress for the Manusina 7’s team. In light of the team’s final selection, Dawn also acknowledges the hard work that was put in by all the girls who have been tirelessly training throughout, “I applaud all the girls who have trained so hard over the last few months, which has certainly made our task as selectors such a difficult one, unfortunately not everyone can go”. Ulia, also adds “based on all that we have seen, we have picked the best team to do the job in Papua New Guinea”.

However, there is much to look forward to in the immediate future, with an exciting array of Women’s International Rugby in stall for Samoan Women in the upcoming months. “There are a lot of Tournaments coming up, not only for 7’s, but also 15’s Rugby, so we encourage our girls to keep their fitness levels up” says Rasmussan. The Manusina 7’s have also been invited to the U.S.A to participate in an invitational tournament which is to be staged in San Diego, early in 2008.

Director of Rugby Development, Lilomaiava Taufusi Salesa, reveals an increase of Women’s Rugby in the IRB fixtures in the next 4 years, and highlights the Samoa Rugby Union’s focus on the IRB 7’s Rugby World Cup in 2009 for both the Men’s and Women’s teams. “ We are now not only focusing on our men’s team for the 7’s Rugby World Cup, but also our Women’s team, so it’s important that we provide them enough fixtures to prepare them well for Dubai, come 2009”.

The Manusina will play through a qualification series however, before they hope to advance onto the IRB 7’s Rugby World Cup. A qualification tournament for Asian/Pacific teams is expected be played at Tahiti in July next year. “It is truly an exciting time for Women’s Rugby, and I believe our Women have so much potential to excel in not only 15’s Rugby but also 7’s Rugby” said Rasmussan.
