Construction of the ST$33 million replacement vessel for the aging lady Samoa II was given the go ahead by the Minister of Transport, Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau last week in Japan.
Tuisugaletaua traveled with the General Manager of the Samoa Shipping Corporation, Papali’i Willie Nansen, to sort out the final tender details and award the contract for construction.
“The actual constructions starts in January next year,” says the Minister yesterday.
“The work will take up most of next year but the boat should be completed and here in Samoa by February of 2010.”
The Minister and his traveling party carried out an inspection of the facilities where the boat will be constructed and are satisfied with the whole set up.

“Right now they are going into their pre-construction phase like cutting steel and finalizing all the detailed designs based on our general specifications, so that by January of next year it is all set for construction.”
The new boat continues an on going programme of assistance from Japan that started with Lady Samoa I and II.
Travel on the domestic route between the two islands have improved significantly since the bigger and better boats started plying the one hour hope between Mulifanu and Salelologa.

We till need a better Boat
written by Frederick Taala, October 09, 2008
For all that money and not able to get more is not good. With the struggling market going now we must and should be able to negotiate with other manufactures of boats to less the travel time to Savaii to half an hour. We need some better agents for the job and sell the economic problems to our advantages for the amount of money we spent.
Good luck.
