Minister of Works Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau

A bus ride is going to cost you a minimum of 20 sene more compared to what you are paying now whereas for taxis it will be 40 sene more.
The new fare structure for public transportation is the final outcome of an index study by the division of transport of the Ministry of Works.
The recommendation for a fares increase received the Government stamp of approval this week.
The Minister of Works who confirmed the new fares to Newsline based on several cost benefit factors complained about by the service providers.
“The continuing increases in fuel prices, spare parts and other things like tyres and car batteries were all weighed up and it shows that a fares increase was warranted,” Minister of Works Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau says.

The current fares that will now be replaced with the newly approved increases was set back in 2005.
“The new minimum fares for buses is now set at 80 sene, an increase of 20 sene, whereas for taxis it has gone up to $1.70 from $1.30 sene.”
But the increases have popped up at a time when fuel prices in Samoa have recorded a drop of several sene per litre for the current month.
“I’m well aware of that.” Minister Tuisugaletaua reacted when asked about it, “but there are no firm indications that the world prices for oil have stablised.
“We could see it going up again next month, meanwhile our service providers for public transportation have carried the burden and continued to maintain the service since the last fare increase in 2005.
“There are some things that cannot be avoided and it is unfair for those involved in the public transportation service to expect to continue to do so when they too have the burden of costs to meet.”
Minister Tuisugaletaua however promised that the fares would be closely monitored and adjusted according to the prevailing economic environment.
He added also that rather than the usual three-year review of the fares, it will be a yearly one by the transport division with adjustments made if required.
