Captain Mark Picketts

The curious looking ship currently docked at the Matautu wharf is one that needs no introduction, its mere presence is introduction enough.
It’s not the usual type we see on our shores, in fact, it is quite rare that such a ship of that nature finds its way to Samoa, but perhaps more intriguing is the man “driving” the ship.
Belonging to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States of America, the Research Vessel is currently being “driven” by Captain Mark Picketts, whose not just a ship driver as he likes to put it but also a scientist when he is on land.
With a PhD in Oceonography, Picketts is well placed in the vessel which travels all over the Pacific to gather data for analysis back in the US by NOAA scientists and researchers.Kai’mimoana, translated Ocean Secret, voyages perhaps to defy that name, for in the work of NOAA, comes the discovery of facts.
“The work we do in oceanography researches weather patterns, satellite images and even fisheries patterns,” Picketts said yesterday.
The job of those on board according to Pickett is to monitor the data received for the sake of Climate Change research.
The vessel specifics according to published facts, states that the Kai’mimoana is outfitted with an upgraded oceanographic system.

The Scientific Computer System (SCS) is a computer system and network that collects, stores, processes and retrieves a variety of oceanographic data from navigation ,sensors, environmental sensors, bathymetric sonar systems, and other mission sensors.
The SCS consists of two networked computer systems that provide both data acquisition and data processing functions.
One computer is dedicated to acquire, log, and display data in real-time, as well as perform real-time data quality assurance functions.
The second computer is dedicated to shipboard scientists for data analysis and their research.
Data can be transmitted to other stations worldwide via satellite communications links.
The data gathered by the Kai’mimoana is published on the NOAA website and other publications by the agency.
Currently NOAA is at the forefront of oceanography research not just in the region but internationally.
Samoa is just one of the islands covered on this voyage by NOAA.
