ALEIPATA MAP : Excitement of new township centres around this area

FAGALOA BAY : New township development opens up another hidden attraction of natural scne spots to boost the tourism industry on the western side of Upolu Island.

The construction of the Aleipata Wharf has become the sparking point of growing excitement about a new township popping out on the eastern side of Upolu.
An accompanying slipway for dry dock maintenance work on the boats is an added attraction.
Both developments are nearing completion.
But the wharf and the slipway are only part of the step way towards the promises of a booming township, based on trade, travel and tourism.
This is the longterm vision that the Minister of Works, Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau, is well on the way to making a reality.
“The Aleipata Wharf will obviously boost trade with our American Samoa neighbour,” Tuisugaletaua says.
The prospects of more agricultural exports to the American Samoa market will be encouraged, with the close by location of the wharf to the rural farming community in the villages.
Savings in fuel for the inter-island ferry trip will be markedly reduced.
“Travel time will be cut down significantly with the Lady Naomi no longer required to make the long trip from Apia, and that is a huge saving in fuel for the Samoa Shipping Corporation.”
The Minister’s vision also encompasses new services that will improve on the roading system and allow for more tourists flocking over to take in the sights of many scenic spots the area offers.
“We’re looking at setting up a new bus service to cater exclusively for those wishing to take the boat ride to American Samoa. The choice is always there either to drive up yourself or take the bus.
“Our Lady Naomi is currently limited to weekly trips across to the territory but additional runs could be scheduled depending on the demand.”
The slipway being built next to the wharf is an added bonus particularly for the Samoa Shipping Corporation, with its fleet of five boats.
The Samoa Shipping Corporation has an annual service bill that runs into tens of thousands for dry dock service in American Samoa for its fleet.
“The services of the Aleipata slipway will be available to our neighbours in the region as well, they can sail there and have that service performed for them.”
The wharf and slipway compound will also host a marina for small crafts similar to what is now available next to the Matautu-tai wharf in Apia.
Once the new developments are fully operations the bigger picture of the growth of the new township takes into account the promotion of tourism and improve road travel around the island.
“We’ll be moving next to construct an airstrip for smaller aircrafts, the landing strip will be extended out to sea.
“This will make it easier for tourists to nip over to American Samoa and back or vice versa for visitors to the two Samoas.”
Road travel through the Le Mafa Pass and the Tiavi Cross Island Road, could be made much shorter also, with plans already in place for a new route to cut across the Fagaloa District.
The route will allow travelers to shortcut through Uafato where the road dead ends at Fagaloa to Tiavea, Aleipata.
Tuisugaletaua is determined to have get the road connection done for other more important benefits that could be tapped into rather than just a quicker way to reach Aleipata.
“The stretch that connects the two villages hold some of the best scenic spots in the country that will rival or even better what we have at Aleipata, including the beaches.
“So we can capitalize on that to continue to promote our tourism industry, the other added incentive is that once we’ve connect that area it will complete the whole roading system all around Upolu.”
The road around the island at present by passes the Fagaloa District as the road detours through the Le Mafa Pass to Aleipata along to Falealili and the southern districts on Upolu.
“We are planning a connection road from Aleipata to Salani, to save on returning to the Le Mafa Pass road to link up to the village on the way to Falealili.”
Ultimately, the development of the Aleipata Township, carries the effective potential of decentralization away from the capital, Apia.
“The population around that part of the country and also the nearby districts on the populated southern side of Upolu have only to travel a short distance to Aleipata .
“They will be saved having to make the longer trip to Apia.”
The reality of the longterm vision Tuisugaletaua is working toward kicks off as early as this year when most of the work is timed for completion.
“We should be able to complete or tidy up any development work needed in the area before the end of our term in office.”
